Two vehicle crash

Police

A 31-year-old woman was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital last night following a two vehicle collision in Marrara.

At about 8.45 pm police received a report of a two vehicle collision at the corner of McMillans and Lee Point Road. Police, Fire and Rescue and St John Ambulance officers attended the scene.

It appears the 38-year-old male driver of a blue Toyota Lexcen was driving along Lee Point Road towards McMillans Road when he allegedly drove through a red traffic light and crashed into a green Toyota Camry causing it to hit a traffic light pole.

The driver and a 32-year-old female passenger then got out of their vehicle and ran from the scene of the crash. Two other passengers, a male aged 33 and a female aged 23 were also in the vehicle at the time.

The female driver of the Camry was trapped and had to be cut from the vehicle by Fire and Rescue officers and conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment. Two passengers in the Camry, a female and male both aged 18, were not injured.

Police conducted a search for the driver and also utilised General Purpose Dog Prowler who located the pair about 100 metres from the crash scene. The male was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital as a precaution and is currently in police custody and expected to be charged later today.

Both vehicles were extensively damaged and had to be towed from the scene.

It appears that alcohol was a contributing factor and investigations are on-going.

The female driver was treated at Royal Darwin Hospital and later discharged.

"The General Purpose Dogs have only been in action for six weeks and have already proved their worth, "said Darwin Watch Commander Senior Sergeant Greg Pusterla.
