Twitter - NT Police Now Tweeting

Police

Members of the public and interested parties can now follow Northern Territory Police on Twitter.

Whether Police are searching for missing people, calling for witnesses, tracking thieves and stolen property, information on arrests or new initiatives, you can now receive updates and information directly through Twitter.

The decision to establish a Twitter account comes after considerable scoping and consultation with other law enforcement agencies across the world and a number of discussion sessions with NT Police members.

Director of NT Police Media and Corporate Communications, Katie Fowden said Twitter is simply an extra means of communicating and it isn't intended to replace existing processes,

"Posting Tweets is simply an additional information delivery system. The main difference is that tweets go direct to the accounts of all those who opt to follow police.

"Followers may be persons who don't read a newspaper or watch television news so this may be the only way Police are reaching this particular group of people to call on their assistance.

"The success of NT Police twitter over time is reliant on people wanting to follow police and stay following. Users can rest assured that Police won't be following them - Twitter is merely an information delivery system.

"When people do need to contact Police including in response to tweeted information, they must do so through the correct channels - by calling 131 444 or triple zero in an emergency." She said.

To find Northern Territory Police on Twitter, go to www.twitter.com and search ntpolice (one word, all lower case) and look for the bush hat and official Twitter verification.
