The Traffic Enforcement Unit strikes

Police

Members of the newly established Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU) have begun life with a bang, conducting numerous RBT's throughout Darwin and the rural area throughout their first week.

The unit was established on Thursday 01 October and has been actively pursuing offending road users from day one.

During that time 253 people have been tested for drink driving and eight of those have been arrested, 10 have been summonsed and 162 received Traffic Infringement Notices.

A further 22 and 24 people received defect notices and cautions respectively.

Superintendent Bob Rennie of the Support Division for Greater Darwin Regional Command said the public needs to be aware that we will do everything within our powers to take offending road users off our roads.

"Continuing on from the work road safety has done in the past; our mission is to lessen the trauma that occurs on our roads.

"We are aiming to target not only drink drivers, but also red light runners, recidivist offenders, drug drivers and heavy vehicle users.

"Large scale RBT's will be conducted in the lead up to the festive season, targeting both arterial and back streets.

"Given the number of fatal crashes that have occurred in recent times I urge every single Territorian, whether it is a driver, a passenger, a cyclist or a pedestrian to use caution when on or even near our roads" he said.
