Suspicious Items –Alice Springs

Police

Police cordoned off an area of the Alice Springs CBD this morning after two suspicious items were located in the Todd mall.

Police apprehended a 28-year-old man in the Todd Mall just before 3am after he was found to be wielding a Samurai sword. Police then located two suspicious items in a bag the man was carrying.

The man was taken into custody and Police bomb technicians were called to assist.

Bomb technicians exploded both suspicious items today.

Superintendent Kym Davies said a search warrant was executed on the man's home and several weapons and drugs were seized.

"Alice Springs Police have members trained in this specialised area who rendered the items safe," Supt Davies said.

"The result of the bomb detonation was a credit to the training and expertise and these members and also to the police who apprehended the man earlier this morning.

"Police would like to thank members of the public for their patience as the area was cordoned off for several hours."

The man is expected to be interviewed later today.
