A 37-year-old man has died following a disturbance in Bloomfield Street last night.

Police said the man was with a number of others involved in a disturbance between two groups of men which began in Gap Road just before 11pm. The fight continued onto the RFDS lawns before one group of three men ran off, pursued by a second group of three men.

They ran along Simpson Street and Skinner Street intoTelegraph Terrace and then into Espie Street until they reached Bloomfield Street. The first group, which was being pursued, then ran into the Keith Lawrie Flats complex. Two of the men then returned with one being armed with an iron pole. Witnesses told police the altercation continued and resulted in the victim being hit to the head with the iron pole. He collapsed and police and ambulance were called. The man was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after.

Police from Regional Investigations Division are investigating and an autopsy will be conducted tomorrow to determine the cause of death.
