Police and Fire and Rescue Service members were called out to a structure fire at the Nhulunbuy Newsagency at about 12:30 am this morning.

Emergency crews were quick to attend the scene and contain the fire; however on arrival extensive damage had already occurred. It appears all stock has suffered fire damage and will not be suitable for resale.

The structure has been rendered uninhabitable for further examination.

A crime scene has been established on Franklin Street and Police and Fire Investigators are treating the fire as suspicious.

Several surrounding commercial premises adjoining the Newsagency also received minor fire damage.

Police are calling for any one who may have witnessed any thing suspicious in the area, or who has further information to contact them on 131444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
