Storm warning #2–Central Australia

Police

A severe weather warning has been issued for the Central Australia district with the possibility of heavy rain and strong winds this afternoon.

Regional Manager of NTES (Southern) Rob Romaldi said preparations were well under way by emergency response organisations in the event of storm damage or flooding.

"Of major concern are the stream rises along the Lasseter Highway and Luritja Road leading to Kings Canyon," Mr Romaldi said.

"They have a tendency to rise quickly and hold their depth for a considerable period of time. NTES volunteers will be on standby and motorists are urged to drive to the prevailing conditions and not attempt to cross swollen waterways.

"In Alice Springs NTES, NT Fire and Rescue Service, Power and Water, Alice Springs Town Council and other agencies all have staff on stand-by in the event of storm damage. The Department of Justice also has prisoner work crews available to help with the clean-up if required.

"Again, we would like to remind people to clean out their gutters and secure all loose objects in the event of gale-force winds and heavy rain. Motorists are also urged to contact 1800 246 199 for road condition reports rather than tying up police lines."
