The taxi was stolen from outside the 24 Hour Store in Gap Road around 11.30pm last night. The taxi driver had left the keys in the ignition while he went into the shop.

Just before 1am a police patrol noticed the stolen vehicle being driven in Lovegrove Drive. When the female driver saw police she sped off, losing control of the car and causing it to crash through the front fence of a house. The taxi was extensively damaged.

The driver fled the scene on foot and a female passenger was arrested. She has been charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle and has been bailed to appear in the Alice Springs Magistrates Court on October 20.

Police are still to locate the female driver of the stolen vehicle. Anyone with information is asked to call 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
