Stolen cheques–Alice Springs

Police

Police are warning retailers to be vigilant following the theft of a number of Centre Link cheques yesterday.

Police received a report yesterday morning from a woman whose vehicle was interfered with at an Alice Springs motel.

The woman told police she had picked up a mailbag for a remote community from the post office on Wednesday. She then left the bag secured in the back of her vehicle at the Elkira Motel, Bath Street, overnight, however, when she went back to her car on Thursday morning the vehicle had been interfered with and several items of property, including the mailbag, had been stolen. The mailbag contained a number of Centre Link cheques destined for the community.

Police are urging retailers to ensure they apply the usual vigilance in checking identifications before cashing any Centre Link cheques.

Anyone with information about the stolen cheques or who suspects anyone of fraudulently attempting to pass such cheques should phone police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Police investigations are continuing.
