A woman had her handbag stolen as she was waiting for a taxi in Smith Street, Darwin, last night.

The 19-year-old woman told police she left the Vic Hotel just before 11.30pm and walked towards the intersection of Smith Street and Cavenagh Street to get a taxi. She was then confronted by a male who ran up to her and pushed her before snatching her handbag. He then ran off down Smith Street and was joined by three other males.

The woman pursued the group and found her handbag discarded near Bank SA. Her ID and cards were still in the bag but $200 cash had been stolen.

The main offender is described as being a male of Aboriginal appearance, approximately 17-year-old, wearing a bright orange Adidas shirt, dark coloured shorts and white runners. The other three males were also described as being of Aboriginal appearance with one of them wearing a white shirt and thongs.
