Special Operations –Central Australia

Police

Police in Central Australia will be mounting a number of special operations over the Christmas and New Year period to counter anti-social behaviour and grog-running into communities.

Operation Fescue has been structured to prevent liquor and cannabis being brought into remote communities.

Acting Superintendent Darrell Kerr said the operation would involve every police station in the southern division.

"This operation is aimed at ensuring remote communities remain grog and drug free, " A/Supt Kerr said.

"This festive period should be a time for everyone to enjoy their families in a safe and peaceful environment, and we're aiming to ensure this happens.

"All police stations in Southern Division from Warakurna in Western Australia to Yuendumu in the north, will take part over the campaign which will take place from December 23 to January 3.

"Police will be conducting RBTs and random traffic checks. The drug dogs will be used as well, and Southern Traffic operations will also assist. And offenders may be assured they won't just be coming across police on the main inroads to the communities, but they can expect to see police on the back roads as well.

"We again urge motorists to take care on the roads. This means don't drink and drive, make sure you wear your seat belts and most importantly, have a happy and safe Christmas and New Year"

In Alice Springs police will also be targeting anti-social behaviour and drink drivers.

Operation Doushen will continue targeting youth and deterring anti-social behaviour.

Acting Commander Lance Godwin said the operation would also be supported by another high profile public safety campaign covering December 23 and 24.

"The community can expect to see an increase in uniformed police patrols in and around the CBD as well as an increase in plain-clothed police around town," A/Commander Godwin said.

"We expect an influx of visitors to the town and an increase in the amount of cash they have to spend, so we are gearing up to ensure there isn't an escalation of drunken and anti-social behaviour.

"We want everyone to be able to enjoy this festive season, and we will be doing everything in our power to see that occurs."
