Police are calling for witnesses in relation to a sexual assault that occurred in Nightcliff early this morning.

It is alleged a 36-year-old woman was walking near the Shell Service Station when she was approached by an unknown male. The victim walked with this male to the Pavonia Place laneway before being sexually assaulted.

The offender is described as an obese man of Aboriginal appearance.

The woman was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital for injuries to her shoulder and has since been discharged.

Police urge any one who may have witnessed this incident or has information in relation to the offender to contact them on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
