Road toll rises to 24 - 4382990 - update

Police

A 26-year-old Alice Springs man was killed this morning after the vehicle he was travelling in rolled about 40 kilometres from Alice Springs on the Tanami Highway.

The vehicle, a silver Mazda Tribute, was earlier reported stolen from a premises in Brown Street, Alice Springs.

Alice Springs Police along with crash investigators and a detective from the Regional Investigation Division attended the scene and investigations are continuing.

Indications are that the man may not have been wearing a seatbelt and it is not known whether speed or alcohol were a contributing factor.

For cultural reasons the man's name will not be released.

"We cannot heed the message strong enough that seatbelts can and do save lives - not wearing a seatbelt greatly increases the likelihood of being severely injured or tragically killed, "said Senior Sergeant Anthony Barry.
