Recidivist drink drivers busted

Police

Police arrested three recidivist drink drivers between 9:30 pm last night and 3:00 am this morning.

A 22-year-old male was arrested after allegedly causing a crash in Rapid Creek at approximately 9:30 pm.

It is alleged that the male was travelling in a Mitsubishi Magna along Waters Street and failed to give way at an intersection, subsequently crashing into the driver's side of a Daewoo Nubira resulting in the single occupant being conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital with minor injuries.

The driver later returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.085 percent and was charged with medium range drink driving and other traffic offences.

It was later established that this is the third time the 22-year-old has been charged with drink driving offences.

Shortly after midnight, police stopped a 31-year-old male driver travelling on Kalymnos Drive in Karama. He was found to have a blood alcohol content of 0.096 percent.

It was later found that he had five previous drink driving convictions in the NT and is also currently disqualified from driving in Western Australia.

He was charged with medium range drink driving and driving whilst disqualified.

A 22-year-old female was charged with medium range drink driving and driving on a suspended license after being pulled over whilst travelling through Bakewell at approximately 3:00 am this morning.

She returned a blood alcohol content reading of 0.096 percent.

It is alleged that she had an interstate driver's license which was currently suspended for drink driving offences.

Territory Duty Superintendent Bruce Porter said that this behaviour is unacceptable.

"The festive season is fast approaching and we have several upcoming targeted campaigns, including RAID (Remove All Impaired Drivers) which is to be officially launched Friday 20.

"We are targeting both recidivist and first time traffic offenders, with particular focus on alcohol and drug affected drivers.

"Road safety is a priority for Police and we are doing all we can to keep our roads safe. All drivers need to be aware over the coming weeks and months that we will be out there and it is likely that you will come into contact with us. So be vigilant, don't drink and drive to ensure that your festive season stays festive" he said.
