Police Southern Traffic Operations have impounded the first vehicle in Alice Springs under the new anti-hooning legislation at the weekend.

Police witnessed a 20-year-old man hooning on Colson Street just before 5.30pm yesterday.

The man was seen by police doing a burnout and fishtailing, which resulted in police apprehending the vehicle.

As part of the new anti-hooning legislation, police issued the man with an infringement notice and impounded his vehicle for a period of 48hours.

Sergeant Conan Robertson of the Southern Traffic Operations Unit said under the new legislation, members of the public were encouraged to report hooning to police.

"As of July 1, the new legislation does not require police to observe people hooning," said Sgt Robertson

"Members of the public can report hooning activities to police, which can result in anti-hooning action being taken.

"First offences will be treated with an infringement notice and the persons vehicle impounded for 48 hours.

"Second and subsequent offences can result in the vehicle being impounded for more than three months or ultimately surrendered to police indefinitely.

Members of the public wishing to report hooning activities can contact police on 131 444.
