Alice Springs Police have impounded a vehicle for hooning after receiving a report from a member of the public.

Under the new anti-hooning legislation, members of the public are encouraged to report hooning activity to police.

Police Southern Traffic Operations received a report of hooning activity at the weekend and investigations later identified a 26-year-old man as the driver of a Nissan Skyline.

The man was issued with a notice for a first offence of hooning activity and his vehicle was impounded for 48 hours.

First Class Constable Justin Firth of the Southern Traffic Operations Unit said this was the first time in Alice Springs police have acted on evidence received from the public relating to the new anti-hooning legislation.

"As of July 1, the new legislation does not require police to observe people hooning,"

"Members of the public can report hooning activities to police, which can result in anti-hooning action being taken.

"First offences will be treated with an infringement notice and the persons vehicle impounded for 48 hours.

"Second and subsequent offences can result in the vehicle being impounded for more than three months or ultimately surrendered to police indefinitely.

Members of the public wishing to report hooning activities can contact police on 131 444.
