Operation RAID – Update 2

Police

Operation RAID (Remove All Impaired Drivers) is now into its third week across the Nation and drivers in almost every state and territory are feeling the effects.

The operation began Friday 20 November and runs through to 12 December and continues to target road users drinking, speeding and even failing to register their vehicles.

From the morning of Friday 20 November through to Sunday 06 December, 6 708 people have been breath tested by NT Police.

Of those, 243 have been caught drink driving, five have been caught driving under the influence of drugs and 527 were caught speeding.

A further 236 were apprehended for not wearing seatbelts, 265 for driving unlicensed, 569 for traffic related offences and 51 for unrelated crime offences.

Nationally 437 841 people have been subjected to breath tests.

Of those 2 484 returned positive alcohol readings, 59 were apprehended for driving under the influence of drugs and 13 668 for speed offences.

There were 3 353 caught driving without a licence and 18 716 were charged for other traffic related offences.

Senior Sergeant Kerry James said the operation is proving a success and that drivers need to remain vigilant.

"Police will continue to be out in force 24 hours a day right up until the end of RAID and beyond.

"We will maintain pressure on drivers well into the new year, so there will be no respite for those who choose to do the wrong thing.

"If you break the law on our roads expect to get caught and suffer the consequences. We have no sympathy if you lose your license as it is better than losing your life" he said.
