Police Commissioner Paul White would like to invite members of the public to join police today in an ecumenical service to commemorate National Police Remembrance Day.

"National Police Remembrance Day is recognised throughout Australasia. The processions and marches are to honour police officers who have died while serving the community, either on or off duty," said Mr White.

A memorial parade in Darwin from Knuckey Street to St Mary's Cathedral, Smith Street will commence at 9.25 am followed by a memorial service commencing at 9.45 am.

Memorial services will also be held in Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs.

In keeping with tradition, the Katherine community will gather at the grave of Constable Bill Condon at 10.00 am. Constable Condon was shot on duty in the main street of Katherine in 1952.

The Tennant Creek memorial service will be held at the Tennant Creek Cemetery at 9.00 am.

The Alice Springs memorial service will be held at 10.00 am at Our Lady Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

"It's a very special day for police and their families and I invite all members of the public to join us in remembering those officers who have died while serving," said Commissioner White.

The public are encouraged to wear Remembrance Day ribbons which are available at the front counter of local police stations for a gold coin donation.

"By wearing the ribbon you show your support for all those officers who have died while serving."

All proceeds go to Police Legacy which supports families of police officers who have died.

The NT Police Legacy, NT Police Association and The Retired Police Association of the NT are hosting a luncheon at Skycity Casino after the service.
