The body of an 11-year-old girl has been found in the Waterhouse River near the Beswick Community (south of Katherine) by members of the Territory Response Section.

A search for the missing girl recommenced at first light this morning. The girl, who suffers from a medical condition and requires medication three times a day, was last seen at about midday yesterday when she was swimming with a group of friends in a local swimming hole.

Police at Maranboy were advised of the girl's disappearance shortly before 10.00 pm last night. Local community members and police searched the swimming hole and surrounding area without success.

A team of six Territory Response Section members and a SARMC (Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator) joined local police and community members in a search of the area at first light this morning and the girl's body was found in the river about 8.45.

A file will be prepared for the Coroner.
