Police are investigating a report of an alleged assault that occurred at a backpackers accommodation complex on Mitchell Street last night.

At about 9:30 pm it is alleged four males attended the victim's room where an argument ensued. The argument escalated into a physical altercation where two of the offenders punched and kicked the 25-year-old Irish National to the face and body.

The man received a broken jaw, lacerations and bruising. He was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

The offenders are believed to have been staying at the complex prior to the incident.

Police are conducting further investigations.
