Marine and Fisheries Seizures

Police

Members of the Marine and Fisheries Enforcement Section (MFES) seized 78 bags of fish fillets from premises at the South Alligator River on Monday.

Marine and Fisheries patrol on Monday resulted in the seizure of 189 portions of skinned fish fillets and fishing equipment. It also resulted in the prosecution of four licensed Fishing Tour Operators.

Four fishing tour operators have been identified as the owners of the fish, who were staying at the resort and operating in surrounding areas.

The three 37-year-old males and a 38-year-old male failed to comply with fisheries regulations by removing the fillet skins.

The removal of the skin makes the identification of fish species difficult and this is the reason for it being an offence to remove the skin until they have returned to their permanent residence.

It is a timely reminder before the Easter long weekend for all fishing and boating enthusiasts to ensure they carry the correct safety gear on board plan their trips and advise their family or friends of their intentions and their return times. It is also incumbent on them to be aware of all the relevant Fisheries regulations.

Senior Constable Dave Cubis said "Police are hoping for a safe long weekend for all those planning fishing trips. Persons need to take ownership of their own safety by carrying all the required safety gear. They also need to know their fisheries regulations. This information is prominently signposted at most Territory boat ramps."

MFES are also concerned with what appears to be an increasing problem with persons interfering with commercial and amateur fishing equipment and in particular crab pots. This is a serious offence and anyone with information should call Police on 131 444.

Media note: A vision and interview opportunity with Senior Constable Dave Cubis will be available at the Marine and Fisheries Shed on Albatross Street, Winnellie at 11:00 am.
