Man charged

Police

A 22-year-old man will appear in the Darwin Magistrate's Court today in relation to a number of offences.

At about 1.30 pm yesterday police sighted a vehicle of interest, a red Ford Telstar, at the Winnellie Post Office. As the vehicle was turning right onto the Stuart Highway, members of the Territory Response Section attempted to apprehend it but the driver failed to stop.

Two Dog Operations Unit vehicles assisted by blocking access to the inbound lane but the driver of the Telstar attempted to avoid apprehension by reversing into one of the Unit's vehicles causing minor damage.

All three occupants, two men aged 22 and 26 and a 21-year-old woman, were removed from the vehicle, arrested and conveyed to the Darwin Watch House. The 26-year-old man and 21-year-old woman were later released from custody without charge.

The 22-year-old man has been charged with:

Fail to obey direction of a police officer
Drive without due care
Drive unlicensed
Possess cannabis (public place)

He was remanded in custody to appear in court today.
