A 28-year-old man will appear in court on charges of drug possession after police seized almost 300 kilograms of Kava overnight.
Pine Creek Police were conducting traffic duties when they stopped the man in his vehicle yesterday afternoon.
On inspection of the vehicle they found a number of garbage bags containing kava in the back seat and rear of the car.
Police found a total of 294 kilograms of kava divided into 14,700 individual deal bags in the man's car. It is estimated it to have a street value of $294,000.
Superintendent of the Northern Operational Service Division Helen Braam said this is just another example of an organised drug trafficking network which is aimed at exploiting people in remote communities.
"Police will continue to target these people who deliberately pray on vulnerable people in communities," said Supt Braam
"This is fantastic work by Pine Creek Police and the Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk, which is a partnership between the Northern Territory Police and FaCHSIA."
The man was arrested and taken to the Katherine Watch house where he remains in custody.
He will appear in the Darwin Magistrates Court on Monday.
