House Fire - Tennant Creek

Police

A family had a lucky escape when a fire broke out in one of the bedrooms of their house in Tennant Creek last night.

Police and fire crews were called to the Casey Street home just before 11.15pm last night after reports of smoke coming from the premises. When fire crews arrived they found the rear bedroom of the house was ablaze and two of the occupants attempting to douse the flames with a garden hose.

All the nine occupants of the house including six children aged between one and 16 years old managed to escape the house when they noticed smoke coming from the room.

The fire was extinguished shortly after and investigations showed the blaze was probably started by a child playing with a cigarette lighter.

Superintendent Bruce Porter said the incident again highlighted the need for adults to supervise their children and keep lighters and matches out of their reach.

All the occupants were treated for smoke inhalation and the children were taken to Tennant Creek Hospital as a precaution.
