NT Fire and Rescue Investigators and NT Police are continuing the investigation into a house fire at Galiwinku yesterday.

The child believed to be at the residence at the time of the fire is a 3-year-old male not 5-years-old as initially reported.

Police can confirm that evidence has been located at the scene to indicate the child has died as a result of the fire; further forensic testing will need to be conducted to confirm the identity.

"This is a heartbreaking event for the family and the community and the identity of the deceased will be not released for cultural reasons" says Senior Sergeant Travis Wurst.

"This is now an investigation for the Northern Territory Coroner and a brief will be prepared accordingly",

Criminal investigators and Katherine police remain in Galiwinku conducting enquiries.
