Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to a house fire in Hillside Gardens in Alice Springs this afternoon.

The fire began just after midday when workers were welding in the ceiling of the house. Police believe sparks from the welding ignited material in the ceiling which started the blaze.

The workmen escaped the building and fire crews were called, however the house was extensively damaged.

Police said quick-thinking neighbours and passers-by tried to douse the flames and hosed down neighbouring homes until fire crews arrived.

Investigations into the cause of the blaze are continuing.
