Hit and run – Mitchell Street

Police

Major Crime Detectives and Northern Traffic Operations are investigating a crash involving a White Toyota Troop Carrier and a Scooter that occurred just before 12 pm today.

Police received information that just prior to the crash the Troop Carrier had turned into the oncoming path of the scooter as it was driving towards Parliament House on Mitchell Street, and a dispute occurred between the male drivers.

The men continued their dispute for approximately 30 metres before the Troop Carrier allegedly nudged the scooter into oncoming traffic.

The Troop Carrier then drove over the scooter and the 42-year-old male rider before leaving the scene in the direction of Parliament House.

A red Toyota Corolla travelling outbound was forced to stop as a result of the incident and received some front end damage after colliding with the scooter.

Police, Ambulance and Fire crews attended and the male rider was conveyed to the Royal Darwin Hospital where he is in a stable condition.

Police actively tracked down the Troop Carrier on Dripstone Road and arrested the 39-year-old driver within 30 minutes of the crash.

Mitchell Street has been closed between Knuckey Street and Peel Street while Detectives examine the scene.

Territory Duty Superintendent Mike Murphy said that this sort of "road rage" and unsafe traffic behaviour is totally unacceptable.

"Road Safety remains a high priority for police and unsafe road use will not be tolerated. We urge all motorists to abide by the road rules and respect other road users.

"Mitchell Street is a busy area and therefore we are calling for those people who witnessed the incident but have not yet come forward to police to contact us on 131 444," he said.
