Fire and Rescue Service members have managed to contain a 1 000 litre chemical spill at East Arm tonight which was potentially toxic to aquatic organisms.
At about 6.00 pm Fire and Rescue received a report of the spill at East Arm Wharf and twelve fire fighters from Darwin and Palmerston responded to the incident.
They managed to contain the highly toxic chemical, known as Bactron, to the wharf area and none of the chemical has leaked into the water. Fire crews wearing breathing apparatus brought the spill under control by using absorbents and a vacuum machine will then be used to suck up the chemical to render the area safe.
St John Ambulance was also on standby if needed but no-one required medical attention.
The incident is being investigated by the Fire and Rescue Service and Work Safe.
