Police attended the airport at approximately 4:30pm after receiving information. A 25-year-old female was subsequently searched and arrested after she was allegedly found to be carrying 95 grams of cannabis.
The cannabis was contained in 15 separate packages and has a street value of approximately $9,500.
Members returned to the airport at approximately 8:30pm last night and searched a second person. A 29-year-old male was subsequently arrested after police allegedly found him to be in possession of approximately 200gm of cannabis.
A further 95 grams of cannabis and a bottle of liquor were found discarded on the tarmac.
Both the male and the female were charged with possession of a trafficable quantity of a dangerous drug, and supply of a dangerous drug and were bailed to appear in the Alyangula Magistrates Court on 19 January 2010.
Whilst at the airport, police conducting random liquor searches of passengers disembarking a flight found a 30-year-old man to be in possession of a quantity of liquor.
The man will be summonsed for the offences at a later date.
Senior Sergeant at Alyangula Police Station Lee Morgan praised the efforts of the Groote Eylandt members in seizing such a large quantity of illegal substances.
Separately, a domestic dispute has occurred between a 14-year-old male and female residing in Angurugu Community which has resulted in the female receiving severe lacerations to her hand caused by a machete.
She has been flown to the Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
