Police

The family of a 46-year-old woman who was assaulted early yesterday morning in Palmerston whilst out on her daily walk has issued the following statement:

Media note: Leon, the victim's husband, is happy to read this statement but there will be no opportunity for questions.

"We are appealing for anyone who witnessed this assault to please contact police with any information that may assist them in identifying the person responsible.

We sincerely thank the nearby witness who intervened in the assault which we believe saved her life.

This assault was unprovoked and we believe not robbery motivated. It occurred at daybreak and we are urging anyone who witnessed the incident to call police with any information that could assist their investigation.

Our family has lived in the Palmerston area for some time and we believe it is a great place to live and raise a family."

Media note: Leon will be available to read this statement at 3.30 pm today in the Media Conference Room at the Peter McAulay Centre. Please assemble in the main Foyer.
