Police and fire crews were called to two fires at motels in Alice Springs in the early hours of New Year's day.

The first report was of a fire in the laundry at the Mt Nancy Motel on the North Stuart Highway just after 3am. The fire was found to have started in a locked laundry room which had been broken into. The fire was extinguished a short time later but caused extensive damage to the area.

Just after 4am police and fire crews were called to the Airport Motel in Gap Road following a report of a fire in the laundry at that location. The fire was extinguished a short time later, however, both are being treated as suspicious.

Police are appealing to anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity in the area of either motels between 3am and 4am.

Investigations are continuing.
