Fatality - Ramingining - update

Police

A 27-year-old man was killed this morning after the vehicle he was a passenger in, a white Mitsubishi Pajero, left the road and then struck a tree about 1.5 kilometres from the Ramingining Community turn-off.

When police arrived at the scene they observed that the driver's side front and rear doors were open and a male was located in the front passenger area. Further investigations revealed that three other males aged 17, 38 and 41 had earlier been in the vehicle but left the scene.

The 41-year-old male driver was located and arrested and conveyed back to the Ramingining Police Station where he remains in custody assisting police with the investigation.

Police from Maningrida and Gapuwiyak also attended the scene, along with a crime scene examiner, a detective from Major Crime and a road crash investigator.

Investigations are on-going as to whether alcohol and fatigue were contributing factors in the crash and whether a second vehicle may have been travelling with the Pajero.

The Territory road toll stands at 23 compared to 59 for the same period last year.
