A 30-year-old woman who was also in the vehicle at the time was treated at the scene by St John Ambulance before being conveyed to Gove District Hospital and later flown to Royal Darwin Hospital for further treatment.

It is believed the couple were travelling in a Toyota Landcruiser utility outbound on Melville Bay Road when the driver lost control of the vehicle approximately 100 metres west of the Yirrkala Business Enterprise, and rolled resulting in both occupants being thrown clear of the vehicle.

Major Crash investigators and local police are still at the scene of the crash and it is still to be determined who was driving at the time. Neither of the occupants wore seatbelts and investigations are continuing as to whether speed or alcohol were a contributing factor.

The Territory road toll stands at 26 compared to 63 for the same period last year.
