At about 2.00 am a passing motorist reported the crash to police and on arrival members found the male trapped beneath a Landcruiser utility and a female was located unconscious nearby. The female was treated at the scene by St John Ambulance and then conveyed to Gove District Hospital.

Major Crash investigators will travel to Nhulunbuy today to assist local police with the investigation into the cause of the crash. At this stage it is not know who was the driver of the vehicle and investigations are continuing to determine whether speed or alcohol were a contributing factor.

The Territory road toll now stands at 26 compared to 63 for the same period last year.
