Fatality Free February

Police

The NT Police, Fire and Rescue and Emergency Service are pleased to advise that there were no road deaths during the month of February, the first fatality free month in over a year.

District Officer Steve Osborne of the Fire and Rescue Service has said that although they still had to attend several motor vehicle accidents, it was pleasing to see that there were no fatal crashes during the four weeks of February.

"Fire and Rescue Service members attend a majority of the vehicle crashes that occur on our roads every single day and this takes a toll on the attending members.

"The fact that February was a fatality free month, compared to 5 deaths last year, is encouraging and we hope that this means the message is getting through to the drivers."

"We are hoping that the trend continues throughout 2009 and we, as a community, can improve on the truly dreadful statistics of 2008.

"I would like to take this opportunity to remind people to drive safely, consider the other road users and remember that alcohol, fatigue and speed are all killers. It's just not worth taking the risk - with your life, your passenger's or those sharing the road."
