Fatal – single vehicle – Arnhem Highway

Police

Shortly after 2pm Police, Fire and Rescue and Ambulance crews were called to the scene of a fatal vehicle crash on the Arnhem Highway, approximately 14 kilometres from the Humpty Doo Shops towards Kakadu.

It appears the unregistered red Toyota Starlet hatchback was travelling on the outbound lane when it left the road and collided sideways into a tree.

A 24-year-old female who was a passenger in the vehicle died at the scene and the male driver was cut from the vehicle and conveyed to the Royal Darwin Hospital via Ambulance with serious injuries.

The outbound lane of the Highway was blocked and traffic was diverted through the inbound lane while police examined the area.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash and it is unknown at this stage what factors may have contributed.

Fire and Rescue crews from Palmerston and Volunteer Units from Koolpinyah and Humpty Doo attended.

The Territory road toll now stands at three in comparison to seven for the same period last year.

Police advise motorists to drive safely so that tragedies like this are prevented.
