The Territory road toll now stands at 27, compared to 65 for the same period last year, after a fatal crash last night.
It is alleged that a 30-year-old male was walking across the outbound lanes of McMillans Road outside the Airport Hotel when he was struck by a white Ford Falcon Utility.
It is believed that the driver continued on and parked his car near the Gateway Motel, later returning to the scene on foot before leaving the area.
Police and St John Ambulance members attended the scene, conveying the male to Royal Darwin Hospital where he was declared deceased after a short time.
A crime scene was established and lanes along McMillans Road were blocked for some time as members worked at the location.
Investigations are continuing to locate the driver of the vehicle who was described as being a Caucasian male, in his early 50's, solid build and at the time of the offence was wearing an orange and blue work shirt and had plaster or bandages on his left arm and left leg.
Police urge anyone that may recognise this male, or who may have information in relation to this incident, to contact them on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
