Fatal Motor Vehicle Accident update #1

Police

Just after 4:00 pm yesterday NT Police, Fire Service and St John Ambulance attended a serious two vehicle crash 30 kilometres north of Alice Springs near the Tropic of Capricorn.

Police can confirm that a 45-year-old man has died as a result of the crash.

It is believed that the deceased driving a Holden Astra was turning south out of the truck stop when it collided with a Toyota Hilux travelling north on the Stuart Highway.

The 49-year-old male passenger of the Holden Astra remains in Alice Springs Hospital in a stable but serious condition. The 60-year-old male and 46-year-old female occupants of the Toyota Hilux have been released from hospital.

Further investigations will determine if alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash. Initial investigations indicate that the passengers of the Holden Astra were not wearing restraints.

"Police remind the public to drive responsibly, be considerate to other road users, not to drink and drive or speed, wear seat belts and plan trips to avoid fatigue whilst travelling". Superintendent Michael Murphy said.

The death brings the road toll to eight compared to 16 at the same time last year.
