Fatal – Katherine – Update 1

Police

Police are appealing for any witnesses of a fatal car crash in Katherine overnight.

Police received a report of a single motor vehicle car crash on Gorge Road around 11.20pm yesterday.

The man died at the scene of the crash shortly after St John ambulance arrived.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the man was heading towards Katherine when he lost control of his vehicle causing it to drive off the bitumen and onto the dirt.
The man has then overcorrected causing the vehicle to roll. Gorge Road was partially closed for several hours whilst the scene was examined.

Police will examine all possible factors that could have contributed to the crash. These include alcohol, speed and road conditions. A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Senior Sergeant Stephen Heyworth said the crash was a tragic event for the man's friends and family.

"Once again police urge all motorists to be careful and maintain a safe speed, particularly at night when unknown events can occur.

"Car crashes are far too prevalent on NT roads. We also encourage people not to drive while tired.

Police are appealing to anyone to witnesses who may have seen the accident.
