Police are appealing to motorists to slow down and drive safely after a man was killed in a crash on Amy Johnson Avenue between Tiger Brennon Drive and the Stuart Highway tonight.
An off duty police officer called police and emergency services shortly before 7pm to notify them of the crash, involving a white Toyota Hilux and a blue utility.
It appears the utility was driving towards Tiger Brennon Drive at speed when it collided with the Hilux causing part of the utility body break away and fall down the hill beside the road.
The male driver of the utility died at the scene. His male passenger and the driver of the Hilux were trapped for some time while Fire and Rescue Crews cut them from their vehicles and they were both conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital by Ambulance.
Northern Territory Emergency Service volunteers from the Darwin Unit assisted rescue crews while crash scene investigators examined the area.
Amy Johnson Avenue will be closed between Tiger Brennon Drive and the Stuart Highway overnight and into the morning while police conduct their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Police are appealing to anybody who may have witnessed the incident or who has information that could assist their investigation to call 131 444.
Police are particularly interested in speaking to the driver of a blue utility that was seen driving from Tiger Brennon Drive towards Darwin City at the time. This vehicle appeared to have front end damage, however the extent to which it may be connected to the crash is not yet known.
The road toll now stands at four compared to 10 for the same period last year.
