Following reports of an explosion at 8:37 am (AEDT) on the vessel that was intercepted yesterday to the west of Ashmore Island, the Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services have activated the Emergency Operation Centre (EOC).

The Northern Territory Police Acting Commissioner, Bruce Wernham advises the EOC has been activated to support preparation for reception, investigation and recovery.

"The Emergency Operations Centre in Berrimah enables preparation and coordination of all Government agencies including Royal Darwin Hospital who are currently on standby."
