Emergency Rescue – Litchfield Park - Darwin

Police

A 25-year-old man is in a serious but stable condition after jumping off a waterfall point in Litchfield National Park earlier today.

Darwin police received a report of the accident from park rangers at 11am today.

It appears the man was attempting to jump off the waterfall and into the water below, but instead landed on rocks suffering suspected spinal injuries.

Northern Territory Emergency Service members and volunteers, Darwin Police, Parks and Wildlife rangers and the Vertical Rescue Response team arrived at the park and had to walk to Sandy Creek Falls to attend the distress call.

Due to the location of the man and the rugged terrain it took almost two hours for emergency services to retrieve him.

The man was carried out on a stretcher by the rescue team.

He was medivac to the Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment.

Duty Superintendent Jamie Chalker said both locals and visitors to Darwin needed to be reminded to be careful around waterholes.

"Police would just like to remind people that accidents can occur in waterways and waterholes.

"People who are bushwalking or those just seeking respite from the heat in waterholes, please take extreme care when doing so.

"It's always better to be safe than sorry".

Police would also like to thank the excellent work done by NTES volunteers who assisted in the rescue operation today.
