Death in custody – Alice Springs

Police

Police from the Major Crime Division are investigating the death of a 39-year-old man in Alice Springs overnight.

Police were called to a Chalmers Street address just after 10pm last night in relation to a domestic disturbance. Police were confronted by a male person resulting in the deployment of capsicum spray and taser. Subsequently the man continued to confront police and there was a further struggle. After a short time police observed the person was not breathing and immediately commenced CPR. Ambulance officers arrived and continued to administer CPR however the man died a short time later at the Alice Springs Hospital.

Police from the Major Crime Division are investigating the incident on behalf of the Northern Territory Coroner. The investigation will be oversighted by the Ethical and Professional Standards Command.
