An off-duty police officer chased down a group of youths allegedly responsible for causing damage to a recreational centre last night.

Police received a report just after 7pm that a group of youths had kicked in three sets of large double doors at the Traeger Park Basketball Courts.

Superintendent Lance Godwin, who was off-duty, told police five youths aged 12 to 16 were asked to leave the courts due to anti-social behaviour.

On leaving the stadium the group are alleged to have kicked in three large sets of double doors causing extensive damage rendering them unable to be secured.

Superintendent Godwin gave chase after the group and apprehended one of the offenders and escorted him back to the stadium.

The 12-year-old boy was returned by police to his place of residence and left in the custody of his parents.

The case is still being investigated by members of the Property Crime Reduction Unit.
