It is believed that the 34-year-old male was driving his BMW along Challoner Circuit when he turned left onto an unnamed dirt road and lost control of the vehicle, causing it to crash into a tree.

Witnesses stopped and rendered assistance, pulling the male from the vehicle before it caught alight.

Police, Fire and Rescue and St John Ambulance members attended the scene and extinguished the blaze.

The man was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital to receive treatment however he has since been released.

It is believed that alcohol may have been a contributing factor to the crash and further investigations are ongoing.

Territory Duty Superintendent Jamie Chalker thanked the members of the public who stopped and rendered assistance.

"The quick thinking actions of those who pulled the man from the vehicle may well have saved his life. We see this type of selfless act time and again from those who live in the rural areas of the Northern Territory. I commend and thank them for their actions
