Charges for suspicious items –Alice Springs

A man will appear in the Alice Springs Magistrates Court on several charges including being armed with an offensive weapon in Alice Springs at the weekend.

Police apprehended a 28-year-old man in the Todd Mall just before 3am on Sunday after he was found to be wielding a Samurai sword and a hunting knife.

Police then located two suspicious items in a bag the man was carrying which were believed to be pipe bombs.

The man was taken into custody and Police bomb technicians were called to assist and later exploded the devices.

A search warrant was executed on the man's home and several weapons and drugs were seized. The man has been charged with:

Possess a controlled weapon
Possess a prohibited weapon
Armed in public
Armed with an offensive weapon
Possess ammunition without licence
Possess schedule 1 substance
2 Counts of possessing schedule 2 substance
Possession of Cannabis

Police investigations into the incident are continuing and the man will appear in the Alice Springs Magistrates Court later today.
