Police and fire crews were called to the scene at the crossing near the Roe Creek siding just after 9pm on Saturday. The Holden Commodore appears to have been abandoned on the train tracks some time before the freight train was due to arrive.

The car was extensively damaged while the locomotive sustained minor damage.

Police and NT Work Health and Safety officers are investigating.
