Car Fire –Tennant Creek – 4388051

Police

A two-year-old boy had a lucky escape after his 12-year-old sister rescued him from a burning car at the weekend.
Police and fire crews were called to the Whippet Street home in Tennant Creek around 6pm on Saturday after a report of a car fire. They arrived to find the Mitsubishi Magna sedan fully ablaze.

Police believe the boy was playing with a lighter in the car when the fire started. The boy's sister noticed the flames and quickly dragged him from the vehicle.

Acting Senior Sergeant Jody Nobbs said the young girl should be commended for her quick-thinking in pulling her brother from the car.

"She certainly deserves credit for dragging her brother out of the car, but once again this incident highlights the need for children to be supervised at all times," A/Sen Sgt Nobbs said.

"This could have resulted in a terrible tragedy if the boy's big sister hadn't noticed the flames and gone to his rescue.

"Adults need to remember that small children and lighters or matches can be a deadly combination."
