Two men are in police custody following a car crash in Nightcliff today.

Police received a report at approximately 10.48am today of a single motor vehicle crash on Bougainvilia Street.

Police believe the two men were drinking before they stole a car from a house on Coconut Grove.

It appears the driver failed to negotiate a corner and lost control of the car, slamming into a parked vehicle, street sign and palm tree.

The two men then tried to flee the scene and were apprehended by a police officer in the area.

St John Ambulance was called after one of the men reported chest pains, the man was treated and then the two were conveyed to the Darwin Watch House where they remain in custody.

Police breath tested the driver, who reported a blood alcohol level of 0.233per cent.
