Campaign results no cause for celebration

Police

Despite all efforts by NT Police to keep Territory roads safe over Christmas, Assistant Commissioner Grahame Kelly has said the results from a six-week traffic campaign are no cause for celebration.

"Six road deaths and the high number of charges and offences show that some people are still not driving safely on Territory roads -this group poses a danger to all of us," Mr Kelly said.

The campaign - which began on 19 December and concluded at midnight last night - resulted in more than 4 930 traffic infringement notices being issued - the equivalent of over 820 infringements each week.

A total of 15 057 motorists were breath tested and among the disturbing results were 252 drink drivers detected.

More than 329 people were fined for not wearing seatbelts, while speeding infringements show the message concerning excessive speed and road safety are not being heeded.

"Three thousand, nine hundred and sixty one traffic infringement notices were issued for speeding Territory wide," Mr Kelly said.

"That's a concern, particularly when speed figures strongly in fatalities in urban areas."

There were also 174 unregistered and uninsured vehicles detected and 107 vehicles defected from 5 703 vehicles inspected.

"The road toll for this year stands at two - that makes six for the duration of this campaign. Every death has a devastating effect on the community and we can all contribute to reducing fatalities and serious injuries on Territory roads."

"This can be a year when a line is drawn in the sand by government agencies, road safety bodies, police and road users alike to reduce risk on Territory roads - Police will maintain a focus on road safety and seeks the community's support toward a common goal - finishing each trip alive," Mr Kelly said.
